General Background
The Physiology of Exercise Lab at the Zinman College fulfills two main functions: 1. For learning and practicum as part of Bachelor and Master’s studies in Physical Education, and 2. For conducting tests and evaluations of bodily functioning during exercise for research.
To this end, the lab is in use 12 months a year for tests, exercises and demonstrations with students and other subjects. These tests are conducted as part of Physiology of Exercise courses – in core studies, seminars, specialization studies and electives.
The lab contains two halls: the main one, which is used as a lecture hall, is furnished with a number of basic pieces of equipment on which demonstrations are given as part of the lessons. The second hall serves for research testing conducted by students, as part of their curriculum of studies, and by faculty.
Main areas of research
The main areas of research in the lab are connected to the curriculum:
– Identifying methods and means of measuring physical fitness among athletes and amateurs
– Comparing the efficacy of various training methods for developing aerobic and anaerobic fitness
– Monitoring the energetic expenditure of various athletic activities and determining the mechanical efficiency of running and walking
– Monitoring the energetic cost of routine activities of daily living and determining the mechanical efficiency of running and walking
– Developing norms for the athletic performance of children, adolescents and adults
– Identifying indicators of the athletic and clinical potential of individuals
– Developing methods for monitoring metabolic and hormonal responses of athletes and amateurs to various types of physical effort.

Tests that can be conducted in the laboratory
The tests that can be conducted in the lab pertain to the areas dealt with in the lessons and the equipment that is available. In general, the tests can be divided into three main areas: aerobics, anaerobics, and anthropometrics.
In the aerobics domain the following can be tested:
- VO2max
- Anaerobic threshold
- Static and dynamic lung capacity
- Monitoring oxygen uptake during field running
- Mechanical output of field running
- Movement efficiency in running and walking
In the anaerobics domain the following can be tested:
- Maximal anaerobic output – anaerobic power
- Mean anaerobic output – anaerobic endurance
- Anaerobic fatigue
- Explosive power
- Electronically measured running speed
In the anthropometrics domain the following can be tested:
Body composition: fat %, fat weight and LBM
BMI
