The Motor Behavior Laboratory

The Motor Behavior Laboratory  was established in the early 1980s. It deals mainly with analyzing the effects of using various strategies for prompting and providing feedback to learners, as well as the influence of practice design on motor performance and retention of learning. In addition a variety of motor tests is being used to assess children’s and youths motor performance.  The Laboratory is used by students in the Bachelor and Masters programs and also serves for testing training methods for athletes at various developmental stages.

Main Areas of Research

1. Practice strategies

  • Massed vs. distributed
  • Variable vs. consistent
  • Part vs. whole skill development
  • Specific vs. generalized skill acquisition
  • Game based vs. “traditional” sterile skill development
  1. The effects of different types of feedback:
  • Discrete vs. summarizing
  • Immediate  vs. delayed,
  • verbal vs. sensori-motor or visual
  • Movement process vs. product oriented

Equipment

Special equipment and apparatus for measuring balance, reaction, movement, and total response times, anticipation timing, as well as attention are utilized during classes as well as various research projects of undergraduate and graduate students.
